Appalachian State University----Walker College Internships
Students are strongly encouraged to complete at least one internship during their matriculation. The more internships or relevant work experiences a student has been involved with, the more marketable that student is upon graduation.
Getting Started
Tips on beginning your search for an appropriate internship.
- Create your resume and update every semester!
- Start early! If you plan to do an internship in the summer, then you need to begin your search in the fall.
- Register for your Career Gear Account in order to post your resume online, review internship listings and schedule campus interviews.
- Make an appointment with Heidi Williams, Internship Coordinator for the College of Business.
- The Career Development Center also helps students with internships.
- Attend career fairs every semester and the internship fair at the beginning of spring semester.
- Join the Career Listserve - accessible from the Career Development Center homepage
- Utilize the Career Information Network (CIN). This is a database of more than 600 employers who want to be a resource for our students. To access this database go to the Career Development Center website.
- Compile internship leads from past employers.
- Visit the Career Development Center and attend the many different career development workshops available on campus every semester.
- Schedule a Mock Interview with the Career Development Center.
- Decide if you want to do the internship for credit or not for credit. If you are not sure, visit the Walker College of Business Academic Advising office.
- Utilize ASU Alumni! They are a great resource.

Requirements
In order to receive academic credit for your internship, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have been admitted to the Walker College of Business.
- Your must have faculty advisor approval.
- You must be in good academic standing with the Walker College of Business.
- You may not enroll in additional course work during the internship period without PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL by the Assistant Dean. Before considering a student's request for a waiver of policy, the Assistant Dean requires a letter from the employer stating that they are aware of the student taking classes while completing the internship and foresee no scheduling problems.
- If you plan to do a marketing internship, you must complete MKT 3050 with a C or better prior to the internship.
- Procedures vary slightly for HCM and ACC majors.
